A Stroke Of Genius!

A Stoke Of Genius: By Kellie Kennedy-One Baby Boomers View On Life.

The saying “Stroke of Genius”  means; a clever or creative act.

With Mother’s Day on May 13th, it caused  me to really think about the day.  What topic can I write about, giving my readers a “lightbulb” moment about their own mom? Then it hit me, a “stroke of genius” came over me. National Stroke Awareness Month is in May; in addition to Mother’s Day. Perfect fit!

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death, yet the public is dangerously unaware of the  warning signs and symptoms. I know from personal experience, a large percentage of my friends and family are unaware of the signs of a stroke, and what to do if they suspect a stroke. It is determined by the medical community that 80% of all strokes can be prevented if  awareness and prevention were part of the scenario.  In a recent survey, commissioned by HealthyWoman and The National Stroke Association, it was reported women believed that Breast Cancer was five times more likely in women than stroke. In the survey, 40% of women said they were somewhat or little concerned of the possibility of a stroke. To read more about the survey, click on the link.

Experiencing several TIAs (Transient Ischemic Attack) since 2001, I am able to speak about this topic with  authority. Sometimes called a mini-stroke; with stroke symptoms that lasts less than 24 hours before disappearing. TIAs generally do not cause permanent brain damage, they are a serious warning sign of stroke. Acutely aware of the warning signs of stroke; I live my life attempting to educate others on the warning signs of a stroke, especially women. I am optimistic my friends and immediate family members will  have a “lightbulb” moment; in the event of a possible stroke/TIA situation. Ask the correct questions and acting quickly.

This Mother’s Day, are you running out of great ideas for the perfect gift? I imagine your mom is extremely important to you … right? Think about paying for a “Women’s Wellness” exam. Many view this appointment as the so-called uncomfortable “girly issue” exam.  Not so … the wellness exam performed in  four parts; health history, physical  including the  breast area, pelvic exam and the review of  any other possible health issues, which can lead to a stroke/TIA.

This year, think about giving mom the gift of good health. A stroke of Genius!
